AFD: France extends a grant of 2.5 million Euros to NWSC

On 24th February, the French government and National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) signed a 2.5 million Euro grant agreement (USH 6.25 billion), for partial funding of the « Kampala & Jinja Water Supply Improvement Project ». A soft loan of amounting to EUR 7 million (around USH 18.9 billion) provided by AFD through Stanbic Bank was also granted to NWSC to complete the funding of the project.

H.E. René Forceville, the Ambassador of France in Uganda, represented France at the signing also witnessed by Mr Jean-Pierre Marcelli, the Regional Director of the French Development Agency (Agence Française de Développement / AFD), the arm of French government in charge of implementation of French aid programs.

Hon Maria Mutagamba, Minister for Water and Environment represented the government of Uganda. Mr. Ganyana Miiro, the Chairman Board of Directors and Dr William Muhairwe, the Managing Director, represented National Water & Sewerage Company (NWSC).

In his speech delivered after the signing ceremony, Ambassador Forceville noted that “in the water and sanitation sector, France, which boasts of world leading agencies in the field, wants to become, through AFD, a significant partner of Uganda in the framework of a direct partnership with NWSC”. He expressed his appreciation for the significant technical and financial progress made by Uganda in terms of access to water and sanitation through a competitive public model.

Minister Maria Mutagamba extended Uganda government’s appreciation to the Republic of France and noted that her government would make sure that the money would be put to its proper use.
