From 19 to 21 October, the French Embassy and the AFD (French Development Agency) Office in Kampala welcomed the new AFD Regional Director, Yves Terracol, based in Nairobi. On this occasion, the Ambassador, accompanied the team on the tour of AFD project sites funded by the Group in Jinja, the second largest city.

Water and sanitation sector is a priority for AFD. In Uganda, a grant of € 2.5 million was awarded to NWSC in 2009 to improve the productivity of its intake in Jinja. The work will be completed in November. It will increase the quantity and quality of drinking water produced by the treatment plant. Through this project, this station will supply the city and its surroundings in drinking water at a rate of 120,000 users.

The Agency also supports the development of energy, including electricity generation by financing the construction of the Bujagali hydropower plant. This infrastructure should increase by 250MW total electricity production in the country (only 11% of Ugandans are connected to the network).

The site visit was an opportunity to see the progress of the dam but also to observe the interests of complementary programs financed by the AFD to the population affected by the project: access to drinking water, electrification Rural and reforestation.
These site visits have revealed the relevance of AFD, whether in the water and sanitation and energy.
