Death of the Algerian writer Assia Djebar, member of the Académie Française

Reputed writer translated in more than twenty languages, active film-director rewarded by many prices amongst others the “best historical movie” during the Berlinäles 1983 for her film La Zerda et les chants de l’oubli, but also feminist, ENA graduate and playwright, this multiple leading figure has fought her whole life for women rights and dialogues between cultures.

She ranked among the most important north-African literature’s figures writing in French, was the first muslim woman to get into the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENA) in Paris and the first writer from North Africa to be elected to the Académie Française.

She passed away at the age of 78 in Paris.
