First partnership agreement between UN Women and Embassy of France in Uganda

The promotion of women rights and gender equality forms an important part of France’s interventions in Uganda. For this reason, a partnership agreement covering the period 2014-2015 was signed on 9th December by H.E Sophie Makame, Ambassador of France to Uganda, and Mrs. Hodan Addou, Country representative of UN Women.

In line with this partnership, two associations fully involved in gender issues were jointly identified in Gulu district. The two organisations having previously benefited from UN Women’s support, the Embassy’s Social Development Fund will ensure the continuity of the activities undertaken.

The project to be implemented by Gulu Women’s Economic Development and Globalization (GWED-G) aims at promoting a better understanding of rights among the beneficiaries, through sensitization and training, as well as transfer of skills from those already trained.

Through income generating activities, Gulu Women with Disabilities Union (GUWODU) will contribute to empowering women with disabilities and promoting their rights. It will also organise information sessions on reproductive health for beneficiaries, as a way of improving their access to health services.

Being the first partnership of its kind between UN Women and a bilateral cooperation in Uganda, this agreement signals the strong commitment of the Embassy of France in Uganda and the UN agency and gives a local context to the framework agreement signed between the French government and UN Women. Fighting violence against women and women empowerment are part of the French strategy on gender and development, and they emphasize France’s commitment to the Beijing+20 process.

Alliance française de Kampala, the cultural operator of the Embassy of France, will ensure the visibility of actions taken to promote gender and women rights. The photo exhibition ‘Women in Resistance” organized during the month of September was a perfect illustration of this emerging partnership.
