French paratrooper killed in Mali
A French paratrooper was killed in northern Mali on Wednesday during an operation against an “armed terrorist group”, in the Adrar des Ifoghas massif, a region near the Algerian border that has already witnessed violent clashes against AQIM (Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb) during operation Serval.
President François Hollande expressed his “profound respect for the sacrifice made by the sergeant in a perilous mission that achieved its objectives”. The French President emphasized that French soldiers deployed alongside the Malian army and UN forces are contributing with courage and efficiency to consolidate Mali’s sovereignty and fight against terrorism.
The paratrooper is the first French soldier killed since the launch of operation Bakhane that succeeded operation Serval, and the 10th since French intervention in Mali in January 2013.
